The Clay Garden - Planting Plan - PDF Download

Abundant planting for clay soils. Moist winters. Dry summers.

Turn your clay border into a garden full of flowers, texture and wildlife. Designed by Mykal Hoare of The Gardener’s Lodge, this planting blueprint combines UK native and non-native plants to create a naturalistic border with seasonal interest and resources for wildlife.

Spring daffodils give way to white, soft pink and pale yellow flowers, followed by autumn rose hips, golden grasses and winter stems. Alongside the planting design, you’ll find guidance on caring for clay soil and creating places for wildlife to feed, shelter and overwinter.

Designed for clay soils that remain moist in winter and become drier in summer, without prolonged waterlogging. Some plants will need additional watering during extended dry spells.

What size garden is it designed for?

The planting plan covers a 5 m × 2 m border - 10 m².

Use it as a standalone border or repeat and adapt the layout across a larger garden, leaving room for paths, seating and additional wildlife features.

How many plants are included?

The shopping list specifies 29 plants plus 20 wild daffodil bulbs, across 12 plant types.

  • 1 shrub

  • 1 climber

  • 25 flowering perennials

  • 1 bulb species

  • 1 Ornamental grass

A labelled planting plan and shopping list show which plants to buy, how many you need and where to position them.

Plant profiles explain each plant’s growing requirements, ecological importance and the wildlife that may use it.

Where can you use this clay garden planting plan?

Use this blueprint to bring layered planting to a sunny clay border in a courtyard, suburban garden or larger country garden.

It offers a starting point for moisture-retentive soil that drains between periods of rain. Check your garden’s light levels and seasonal moisture before planting, particularly where water collects in winter or the soil becomes very dry in summer.

Your 12-page Biodiversity Garden Blueprint includes:

  • An illustrated garden visualisation and planting layout.

  • A complete shopping list with botanical names, common names and quantities.

  • Detailed profiles for all 12 plant types.

  • A seasonal interest and wildlife calendar.

  • Biodiversity gardening fundamentals and ideas for additional habitats.
